  • abasement: deep humiliation
  • Abide: Follow, usually a set of rules
  • abrogate: to cancel or repeal
  • adamant: having an unchangeable attitude or opinion, despite any arguments to change it
  • adjective: a word used to describe a noun.
  • Anthology: A collection of literary works, such as stories or poems. 
  • Anthropologist: A scientist who studies bones
  • anticipate: to expect beforehand
  • arrogant: believing oneself to be superior or more important than others
  • befuddled: confused
  • betray: to be disloyal to someone or something.
  • billowing: waving or fluttering; swelling 
  • brusque: to have an abrupt manner
  • Cerebral: Intellectual, smart
  • chide: express mild disapproval
  • Co-ed: co-educational or “boys and girls.”
  • colcannon: a traditional Irish dish of mashed potatoes and cabbage
  • Commencement: The end. Graduation.
  • Common Room: Large living room
  • conceited: believing your abilities, talents, appearance, etc to be better than everyone else’s 
  • conspicuous: easily seen
  • contemplate: to give serious thought; to thoroughly consider
  • conundrum: confusing problem
  • Convocation: A special ceremony to start the school year.
  • cowering: shrinking away in fear
  • credible: believable, true
  • Cryochamber: a container used to deep-freeze humans
  • Day Student: A student who does not live at a boarding school but is driven there each day.
  • Dean: Principal
  • Dean’s List: a list of student who had reached certain academic requirements for a term; honor roll
  • Decorous: Proper, well-behaved
  • Defiant: to be challenging or resistant
  • dejected: in low spirits; disheartened
  • disheveled: untidy or in disorder; unkempt
  • Dormitory: A building where students live and sleep. The bedroom building.
  • dulcet: a sweet, pleasant sound
  • Effervescent: bubbly
  • egocentric: the belief that you are the center of all things
  • elucidate: to make clear or explain
  • embouchure: the shape of the mouth on a musical instrument
  • enhance: improve
  • enigma: puzzle or mystery
  • ensemble: a group of musicians playing instruments.

  • Equitable: Fair; just and impartial
  • espy: to observe from a distance
  • estrangement: to keep away from; to make unfriendly

  • Expelled: Kicked out of school
  • Fathom: Comprehend, understand
  • Form: Grade (as in 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th)
  • futility: uselessness; ineffectiveness
  • Gaggle: A group of geese; a flock
  • Gargantuan: Giant, tremendous
  • gourmand: someone who really likes to eat, usually excessively. 
  • haiku: a Japanese form of poetry she had learned about last year where the first and last line consist of five syllables each and the middle line is seven syllables.
  • harangue: a speech that is loud and attacking
  • Harass: Irritate, torment
  • harbinger: bringers of warning
  • Headmaster: The head of the school. Similar to a head principal.
  • hermit: a person who isolates themselves from society
  • Ichthys: the name of the fish symbol Christians use to identify themselves to others
  • Ignominious: contemptible; disgraceful
  • Immunization: Shots given at the doctor’s office to prevent illness.
  • impending: upcoming
  • incorporate: to include
  • Industrious: Hardworking, diligent
  • ineptitude: unable to perform a task as a result of a lacking skill or ability.
  • ingenious: cleverly inventive
  • inhume: to bury
  • inquisitively: in a curious, questioning manner
  • interloper: a person who intrudes in other people’s affairs
  • intervention: meddling in the affairs of another
  • Intramural: A non-competition sport
  • inundated: overwhelmed
  • inventive: able to create with your imagination
  • Jollity: Cheerfulness, liveliness, celebration
  • Jump seat: a seat within a vehicle that folds away for storage  
  • labyrinth: a complicated maze
  • labyrinthine: highly confusing
  • lament: to express, feel, or show sorrow, regret, or grief
  • Legion: A great number, a multitude
  • livid: extremely angry
  • maladroit: awkward
  • Matriculation Ceremony: A special ceremony to start the school year.
  • Mediate: To resolve a dispute between two other parties.
  • metaphor: comparing two thoughts or ideas without using “like” or “as”
  • mystifying: purposefully confusing
  • Naïve: Lacking experience and understanding
  • narcissistic: being obsessed with yourself
  • noun: a person, place or thing
  • noxious: harmful or poisonous
  • nuzzle: to tightly snuggle
  • obelisk: a four-sided stone that tapers at the top, similar to a thin pyramid
  • obfuscate: to deliberately make something difficult to understand
  • Objectify: to treat a person as an object
  • Office Hours: A period of time when the teacher is in his/her office and available for a student to just drop in and ask questions.
  • Orderly: Neat, systematic
  • Orientation: A meeting introducing people to the school and its rules.
  • P.G.: Post-Graduate. A person who has graduated high school but continues to take high school classes.
  • Peer: Equal, contemporary, match
  • Pendulum: A large ball suspended by a string or cord, that is able to swing freely.
  • plaudit: a strong praising statement
  • pompous: being showy in displaying ones importance
  • port de bras: translated “carriage of the arms”, you place your arm to the side, then gently bend forward from your waist, sweeping the floor with your hand before standing upright with your arm above your head.
  • Portfolio: Suitcase
  • Prefect: an older student, usually a sixth-former, who is in charge of younger students.
  • Prestigious: Fancy, popular.
  • proctor: a teacher who monitors students during a test
  • prose: literary works that are not poetry 
  • psyche: human mind or spirit
  • qat: a type of evergreen tree native to Africa and Arabia
  • Query: Question
  • Recall: Remember, cancel, revoke, take back
  • repertoire: a list of musical works a musician is able to perform, parts an actor can perform, etc.
  • replete: full
  • reprehensible: horribly bad
  • resolved: determined
  • rond de jambes: translated “round of the leg”, you begin with your heels together and toes facing out, then push one foot forward with your toe pointed, move it around in a circle with your toe on the floor at all times, until your foot is pointed behind you, then push your foot straight past your standing foot to return to the forward position.

  • sabbatical: an extended period of absence 
  • sacristy: a room to the side of the church alter, where the sacred objects, such as vestments, are stored and in which the priest often prepares for mass.
  • sectional: each section of the orchestra meets separately. 
  • simile: a comparison between two thoughts or ideas using “like” or “as”  
  • Smug: Excessively self-satisfied
  • summoned: called forth
  • surreptitious: obtained sneakily or stealthily
  • Syllabus: An outline, usually for a class
  • tangible: able to be touched
  • tardy: late
  • Taunt: Tease, ridicule, mock, insult
  • tentative: to be uncertain
  • terse: brief, concise, pity
  • thesis: the topic or main idea of an essay
  • vainglorious: being overly proud of your accomplishments and abilities
  • Verbose: Wordy
  • vestments: the ceremonial clothes a priest wears to celebrate Mass
  • vexillum: the flag carried by ancient roman military troops
  • vicariously: sharing an experience with someone by imaginary participation in the experience
  • voracious: Eating large amounts of food
  • wonk: a person who spends too much time studying and has no social life. 
  • Wry: Dryly humorous, bent or twisted in shape or condition
